In the wake of Sandy

As most of us were able to watch last night, NJ and much of the eastern seaboard were battered by Sandy.  We even felt her affects here in Ohio, where winds howled through the night and the grass was dusted with snow in the morning.  She was a monstrous storm to say the least.

I spent yesterday sick with anticipation waiting for her.  Knowing that all my friends and immediate family were in her direct path.  Knowing the devastation we lived through a year ago with Irene.  Knowing Sandy was going to be worse.  I hoped that my town would be spared.  Hoped that Sandy would weaken or take a turn.  Stay out at sea.  I kept sending out texts and making calls, refreshing Facebook every chance I got.  I downloaded the live feed to ABC's eyewitness news.  It made me feel closer.  Which I needed.

I felt strange all day.  Just alone and so far removed.  I hate storms, but I wanted to be there.  Wanted to be hunkered down bracing for her.  I know that might not make sense, and I won't try to make sense of it for you because I can't.  I just felt wrong for being here.  In Ohio.

I pretty much drank wine and ate my weight in M&M's, glued to the computer, watching in utter disbelief at the devastation.  I couldn't sleep, worried sick about my family and friends.  And here I am today.  Going through the motions of my day in a fog.  Feeling like I have survivor's guilt.  It's so weird, but that is the only way I can explain it.  Perhaps it's because I feel helpless.  Perhaps it's b/c no one has power or cell service, so I haven't had my usual day full of texts, calls, and Skypes.  Maybe because while I'm snuggled up in my warm home, able to use my computer, flip on a light switch, flush a toilet, and eat a nice meal, all of those I love are without power.

I am grateful that being without power, or being temporarily displaced in a hotel is the worst my loved ones have to deal with.  Basements didn't flood and houses were spared, though trees fell.  All my loved ones are present and accounted for.  Thank you, God.  But lives were lost.  And my heart is aching for those families.

And when I see the aerial shots of the Jersey Shore, my eyes well with tears.  When I say "Jersey Shore" I'm not talking about Snooki.  Or The Situation.  I'm not talking about Meatball problems.  I'm talking about the beloved Jersey Shore.  My beloved Jersey Shore. Beaches and boardwalks.  Exit 98.  Exit 63. Summers.  Weekends.  Family.  Friends.  Memories.  Lots and lots of great memories.

Let us all be reminded what a gift each and every day is.  No day is promised.  There are no guarantees for tomorrow. Continued love and prayers to all of those affected by Sandy.

Zucchini Pie

I cook when I'm nervous. Something about chopping garlic and making a mess of my kitchen helps to restore my balance. That and a glass, or two, of wine.

Hurricane Sandy is literally on a crash course for my hometown. Where my family lives. My friends. I'm a worrier by nature, so I'm worrying.  Luckily I've got Breaking Amish and Homeland on tonight to distract me.  That and Zucchini Pie, of course.

Last year, Irene flooded our basement and knocked power out at my in-laws, aunt's, and friends' houses for a week plus. This storm is supposed to pack a punch far worse. I'm hoping they're wrong.

I feel like I'm sitting in a hospital waiting room while someone I love is undergoing surgery. You know, that helpless feeling of endless waiting and anticipation. Bizarre, I know. It just feels strange to be here. In Ohio. Not in NJ. I feel removed and alone and nervous. So I turned to the kitchen. Despite several other things demanding my attention, Zucchini Pie sounded infinitely more appealing. And I'm hoping, since it's even better the second day, it's something my newly picky toddler will eat.

Zucchini Pie
{recipe From Aunt Fran- not sure where it may have been adapted from}

3 cups zucchini, sliced thin, with skin
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 clove garlic, cut fine (I used 2)
4 eggs
1/2 cup grated cheese (I used Locatelli Pecorino Romano)
1 cup Bisquik
1/2 cup oil (I used Wesson Canola Oil)

**you can add bacon bits or crumbled bacon, if desired**

Mix together, pour into greased pie plate and bake @ 350 degrees for 1 hour or until brown (only took about 45-50 minutes in my oven)

Enjoy!  Delicious for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, served hot or cold! Yum!

Eat your heart out, Picasso

I may just have a little artist on my hands. Coloring has become the latest obsession in our household.

Elena knows where the crayons are kept and first thing in the morning, when she wakes up from her nap, and usually when she's eating dinner, she will beg, I mean BEG me for her crayons. And then throw a complete hissy fit if I don't oblige her.

Begging for crayons sounds sort of like "guhhhhhh, guuuuhhhh" with some emphatic pointing and signing "please" over And over. And over. Until I give in and get her the crayons. Really looking forward to some sort of language explosion soon.  "Guuuuuhhh" pretty much means crayons, banana, dog, light...you get the idea.

The crazy thing is, she really colors. Like totally concentrates and gets all close to the coloring book as she "works." She even holds the crayon so precisely and with such purpose. And pens- for the love of God- you cannot use a pen it this girl's presence without her demanding it. I literally have to hide pens. But if she gets her hands on one? She will sit there and scribble away like she's penning the next best seller.

I love it. I mean I was pretty much obsessed with coloring as a kid and still get all sorts of happy over a brand new Crayola 64 pack. Love. Just something about new crayons. I can't be the only one?!?!

I can still remember coloring this Rudolph decoration in Kindergarten. It was just a silly cut out from some oak tag with an X cut through Rudolph's nose- to be put over a doorknob during the holidays. I still have it. #thanksmom. Anyway, point is- I can actually remember choosing the brick red for his nose and the midnight blue for his eyelids. I couldn't read yet, but I knew all the color names by heart. Those colors- all of them really- bring back so many specific memories and emotions for me. Periwinkle, sea green, thistle, raw umber, cornflower. Magenta. Oh Magenta. It was my favorite because, well, it was my sisters favorite.

So, crayons- yeah, we have a history. And I'm a little nerdy and a lot excited that we get to have a future, too. Hoping my little girl continues her love of coloring so this mama can enjoy a new 64 pack every once in a while.

Holy Sh*t! Literally.

So I wrote my weekend review post last night but my computer decided to be a jackass difficult and not upload any photos to my post.  Grrr.  Totally frustrating.  So, I've shelved that post until I can add my pics.  Nothing like a mid-week weekend review, right?

In the meantime, let's talk about the fact that my 17 month old POOPED on the potty on Saturday night.  Yes, you heard that right.  Aren't you so glad you decided to read this? Poop on the potty is just the sort of shit {pun intended} that I refuse to post on FB, because really?  Who cares?  But here--On this blog--On this little forum that is mine....I'm sharing.

I haven't given a single thought to potty training other than randomly buying a potty a few months ago.  Just to have.  For when we were ready.  Do I think we are ready?  No.  Not at all.  But that still doesn't change the fact that she's got something figured out all of a sudden so we're going with it.  So maybe she *is* ready.  And maybe I'm the one who isn't.  Potties are for big girls #slowdownlittlemama

The moms in my play group all have kids the same age as Elena and they were talking potty the other day at the park.  Potty training, which really wasn't even on my radar until that moment.  I started to feel like maybe I should think about it.  So, Saturday night before bath I pulled out the potty just to get Elena used to seeing it in the bathroom.  I decided to just set her on it and see what happened.  She sat for a minute or so.  Then I heard something.  Then she looked down to peek between her little legs.  And then she pointed.  Holy sweet mother of GOD.  There was poop.  She didn't seem phased in the least.  She actually sort of gave me a DUH look.  Like where had I been all the times she sneaked out of her crib to use the 'ol John. Pssht.

Paul came in with the camera and started taking pictures.  And yes, if you were wondering, I totally took pictures of the poop.  More so to text to my sister-in-law, but still, I did it.  Who am I kidding.  That shit is totally going in the baby book.  Lucky for you I still can't upload my pics from camera.  But I did get a few on my iPhone, like this one of the moment she realized what she'd done.  The pic of her pointing in the toilet shows her privates, so totally inappro-pro to post but it is so freaking cute.  "Hey look, ma!" She's gonna kill me one day.

Sunday morning after breakfast I decided to sit her down on the potty again.  Just for shits and giggles {hehehe}.  As soon as that tiny hiney hit the bowl she started tinkling.  PEE PEE in the POTTY! You could have knocked me over with a feather at this point.  I honestly couldn't believe she peed on the damn potty.  I proceeded to carry her to the changing table to put a new diaper on and she went berserk.  I'm talking flipped her noodle and I literally could not get a diaper on her.  Frustrated, I put her down.  I mean, she'd just peed so I wasn't worried about her springing a leak on the carpet or crawling up onto our bed and peeing like she did Thursday night.  Well, wouldn't you know it....girlfriend marched herself right back into that bathroom and sat right back on that potty and freaking POOPED! Whaaaatttt?!  Totally flabergasted.

She woke up today and Monday with a dirty diaper so obviously we didn't get anymore poop on the potty and every time I tried to put her back on for a pee, no dice.  I'm not pushing it but I figure why not just keep giving her opportunities.  Right? I can usually tell when she is pooping or about to, but as of now she isn't outwardly communicating that she has gone or has to go.  Not really sure where to go from here.  It really seems super soon to start potty training but everyone I've talked to says to go with it.  I was a child development major.  I must have been hung over slept through potty training 101. This mama is clueless.  I plan to get some potty books.  Some for Elena and some for me.

Open to your war stories and successes if you've potty trained...please share!

Pumpkinpalooza

Fall is in full swing here in Ohio and we are taking full advantage off all the goodness it has to offer.  I cannot get enough of pumpkin anything and everything.  Including pumpkin farms.  We've managed to get ourselves to three so far this season.

Soooo, when Paul asked what I wanted to do this year for my birthday I eagerly volunteered going to the pumpkin farm.  Lucky for me, Paul enjoys doing all the festive type family things.

We intended to go apple picking, which the farm also offered, until we realized it was Pumpkinpalooza.  We all know how I feel about pumpkins and I'm pretty sure anything that ends in palooza guarantees a good time.  Well, maybe not anything, but anyway, our decision was made. Pumpkinpalooza beat out apple picking and my theory about paloozas proved true.  It was a good time.

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Picking the perfect little pumpkin

The cutest pumpkin in the patch

Classic

I was the mean mom who totally found humor in the fact that my child was hysterical over the scarecrow.  She certainly lived up to her name and scared the shit outta my kid.  And of course we are the classy parents who capitalized on the moment and took lots of pics.

Luckily, the tears didn't last for long.  We had a great day.  Hayride- check.  Pumpkin- check.  Food- check.  Scarey Scarecrow- check. Mama even got some cotton candy and ate the whole damn bag herself.

Truly an awesomely fun day.  With my two favorite people on the whole planet.  The perfect way to usher in the big 3-5.  Happy Birthday to me.  It sure was.

So What! Wednesday

So What Wednesday

Been a while, but luckily this SWW thing is just like riding a bicycle.  This week I'm saying So What! if...

-Elena and I are going to our third pumpkin patch on Friday. It has nothing to do with cider donuts #bigfatlie and everything to do with my love of fall #truth.

-I missed SWW so much during my recent blog hiatus that I found myself So What Wednesday-ing in my head at random moments. Not only on Wednesdays either.

-I'm still not feeling good about my post baby body. I've recommitted to tracking calories in/out with my fitness pal and started my turbo fire workouts again. #buhbyemuffintop  If you're on MFP- add me as a buddy and hold me accountable! {kcamp07}

-I'm being a cry baby b/c our dryer is broken. The replacement part is gonna take 7 business days to come in. Seriously? I do a lot of freaking laundry, people.

-I'm contemplating using the broken dryer as an excuse to buy some new clothes.

-I am stalking Victoria's Secret in eager anticipation of their Pink collegiate line. I need some cute OSU threads so I look like I belong here in the Buckeye State.

-My DVR recorded Extreme Cheapskates on TLC.  On purpose.

-I lay in bed every night looking at the day in photos I took of my little love. I just can't get enough of her.

-I usually hate on Ke$ha but am obsessed with Die Young.

-I left one side of the fridge cracked open last night.  ALL night.  And I'm a paranoid freak so things that felt less that cold went straight in the garbage.  Actually, it totally pissed me off to have to throw so much away.

-I'm obsessed with my husband {this morning, especially} b/c he told me to relax about the wasted food and go get what we needed at the food store.  To quote him, "Make it an adventure...go buy all new stuff."  He hates wasting more than I do so this was an unexpected response from him.  I'm pretty sure he was so lax about it b/c he's away and knew he'd have no part in the food shopping process...which he despises.

Thanks for stopping by...looking forward to hopping around to see what you all are saying So What! to this week!

Weekend Review

So yeah, it's been a while.  Not sure what's up with me lately.   I suppose life is getting the best of me.  That's a good thing though, right?  We have been busy living here in Ohio, that's for sure.  We're finding our groove and getting into it more each day.

Blogging has been on my brain a lot lately, though.  I don't know how all you devoted bloggers do it.  Make time to be so thoughtful and witty and real each and every day. Teach me.  Honestly, this toddler gig is no joke and I am spent by the time Elena goes to bed.  Like literally, good for nothing.  I honestly have to accomplish all I want or need to do before she goes to bed.  If I don't?  It doesn't get done.  Once she goes down I just want to hit the bottle and catch up on DVR decompress.  And nap time?  Well, that's when I do all the stuff I'd be too tired to do *after* she's gone to bed.  Clean.  Cook.  Work out.  Catch up with calls and cards and all the other stuff.  I find myself checking FB and Twitter on pee breaks and red lights and at 2 in the morning, thanks to my old friend insomnia.

I'm re-evaluating a lot of things in my life lately and realize I need to work on my time management.  Making time for important things like documenting our life *is* important.  So,  I'm signing myself back up for blogging.  Starting tonight.  This little girl of mine is growing up at such an alarming rate and this mama doesn't want to miss one iota of it.  There is so much on the horizon that deserves to be captured and celebrated and remembered.

And now, here's a little weekend recap for ya! {b/c if you're still here and still reading, you at least deserve some pics of my little love}

Friday Elena and I went to a local farm with the Mom's group we are a part of.  We're having fun making friends and getting to enjoy this beautiful mid-west fall.  For six bucks we got to pick a pumpkin from the patch and choose a gourd, enjoy a sinful sugared donut with some juice, and have some playtime.  Elena loved driving the trucks through the corn box (like a giant sand box, but with corn, obviously) and running around through the giant hay maze.  She had a blast and cried when it was time to leave.

She's been a solid napper lately and Friday was no exception.  She was well rested for her second stop on the campaign trail...Lancaster, Ohio for a Romney/Ryan rally.  It was great energy and super exciting for all three of us.  We had a great view of the Governor and Congressman.  I haven't uploaded the pics from my camera yet, so here's a pic from the freezing cold rally we went to earlier in the week {we left before Romney arrived} and a mobile pic of Daddy and his little conservative at Friday's rally.

We left before Mitt was done speaking {Not gonna lie, I kinda felt rude, like hellloooo, we are walking out on the next President of the United States!?} But I hoped Mitt would understand this mama did not want to be stuck in traffic almost 2 hours from home.  Yeah, no.  Apparently Mitt doesn't like sitting in traffic either.  So, despite our best efforts to get outta dodge before the masses, the highway was SHUT DOWN in anticipation of Mitt's tour bus.  We were literally stuck. Luckily we were able to pull into a McDonald's so we could eat.  Here is Elena shoving a grilled cheese in her face.  I mean, seriously, I'm lovin' it.  Sorry.  I had to.  But really, she looks like 8 or something.

Saturday was a big day for all of us.  It was Elena's first day without "milkie".  We are officially weaned.  It's an emotional subject.  Certainly due it's own post.  I've already written about in the notes on my iPhone and I'm hoping to transcribe it to the blog in the next week or two. We've gone steady and strong for the past 17 months.  To make it easier on both of us, I started a very gradual weaning process that eliminated one nursing session about every 2 weeks.  It has gone smoothly for the most part.  Today is day 3 and, though she is still wanting to nurse, she is easily distracted and I just keep reminding her that she has her big girl cup for milkie now.  My emotions and hormones are all over the place and I find myself crying at random moments.  Honestly, I would have been happy continuing until she self-weaned but b/c we are hoping to start fertility treatments soon, I can't be nursing on the meds I'll be taking. She's never been a big drinker from the sippy to begin with and although I've been offering whole cow's milk  in one since she turned 1, she is finicky.  Well, here she is on no-milkie-morning number one and girlfriend downed all of that milk in her tilty cup, which seems to be the only one she'll take it from.  And I've tried them all.  She drinks water from a straw sippy but will not take milk from one. Needless to say it was bittersweet but I was one proud mama.  There may or may not be some strawberry Quik added per pediatrician's advice.  And yes, those are Christmas pajamas.

Take note of Lola going in for the snack trap of Cheerios.

Luckily we had swim lessons on the morning agenda so we could keep her occupied and tucker her out.  She loves splashing with Daddy and had a blast dunkin' the punkin'.

stupid blurry iPhone pics

Learning to get out of the pool
Sunday we did some stuff around the house and ran some errands.  Capped off the weekend with some Chipotle for dinner and lots of good TV.

Loving this pic and how they are making the same expression and gesture.  My favorites, these two.  I just adore the bits out of them.  And yes, that's a tutu over her sweats #lovehavingagirl

Phew.  I feel like I just lost 10 pounds after all that.  Feels good to get some stuff out of my brain.  I needed that.
Can't wait to get back to reading and catching up and commenting.  All that good stuff.
xoxo
